Gratitude for the Rich Dialogue of Review Culture

Recently, I’ve been receiving message after message saying, “I wrote a review for you.”

For my new album Ancient Seeds, most of the promotion has begun in the United States.
In that country, where countless genres coexist and each has its own deeply rooted listeners, the culture of music reviewing is remarkably developed.
These reviews — which articulate and offer new ways of “listening,” new ways of “experiencing” music — are truly precious to me.

Even as the creator, I often find myself thinking, Oh, I see — that’s another way to hear it.
I simply do my best to release into sound what I hear in my inner world.
And yet, there are moments when a thought creeps in: Is this really useful in today’s world?
At such times, I am deeply supported by these many thoughtful reviews.

Music that “sells,” music made to “fit the flow,” music created as a “career” —
beyond all of that, there are so many other kinds of sounds in this world, in this universe.
It is no different from the diversity of life itself.
When each life shines in its own way, it benefits the whole;
in the same way, I want to believe that the existence of many different kinds of sound helps till the soil of human awareness.

In that sense, these discerning, supportive reviews — reviews that cheer on every unique way that sound can exist —
are themselves cultivating and enriching the culture at large.
